The big difference between the two is sensor size. To know how this will effect the quality of the video you will need to understand pixel density. The 7D has smaller pixels meaning less light in each pixel. The 5D has huge pixels by comparison, even larger than many dedicated video cameras. This allows more light in each pixel providing more accurate colors, less noise, and overall better quality. Lenses are also very important. The 7D will probably be fine for what you are doing, but the 5D is better.

Your friend is clueless. Neither camera use their entire sensor when recording video. Full HD video is only around 2 megapixels no matter what camera you use. There might be some things that make the video different between those cameras, but the difference regarding on the size of screen the video is shown on does not exist.

You want a good review, get it from the director, filmmaker Philip Bloom, he prefer the 7D over the 5D MII.

I used both before buying and settled on the 7D, for the following reasons:

At the time the 7D had a 25fps PAL mode, the 5Dmk2 did not.

The 7D exhibited less rolling shutter.

The 7D has a fast 720p mode (60/50fps)

The cropped sensor makes fast aperture focusing less critical.

Also in terms of stills...

The 7D kicks the 5Dmk2's *** in terms of AF performance and drive speed.

That suits my interests. May not suit yours.

Both are excellent documentary cameras.

Keep the ISO below 1600 and you'll struggle to seperate the images from either, other than the effect on focal length and depth of field.

It gets down to the larger the sensor the better the image in the long run. Everything else is bells and whistles.

The 5d Mark II is better. It has much lower noise at high ISO, significantly better image quality, much better color depth, much larger sensor, weather sealed, significantly larger viewfinder, higher true resolution, slightly more dynamic range and better boost ISO. The lenses do matter but the 5d Mark II has more pixel density, as stated by an answer above, which means it can absorb more light and hence would give better quality. Read this review for it to get more info for it by an actual owner:

To compare the two, read the specs and other details of the 7d as well:
