So I bought a class 10 PNY SD card for my DSLR a few weeks ago. 8gb. When I initially put it in it held 985 photos. Now it says that it can only hold 190. I bought another memory card. Same kind, and when I put the new one in it was fine. Why is this happening to my memory card?

Did you remember to format your brand new card before you first used it? No? Then...transfer ALL files from the card, over to your computer (and back them up if u need to) then format the card via the camera Menu ONLY, not by computer.

Do a format every time after you transfer all files to your computer (try to do this at the end of a day's shoot). Don't make a habit of leaving images on the card and only deleting a few, then shooting some more and so on. You should shoot, then transfer, then format. This deletes everything from the card and keeps it in good working order.

I'm guessing your not using My Computer or Finder to view the card's contents. Using the camera, format the card to erase everything inside. When you transfer pictures from the camera to the computer, ignore the pop-up box (cancel it) and use My Computer or Finder for more control.

either you have taken hundreds of pictures or some video which has taken the space, the card may have been corrupted and have bad sectors (you should backup your card and then format the card on the pc or through the camera after backup)

or if your purchased the card online from ebay, it could be a fake.

All sorts of "rubbish" builds up on the card as you use it. Files that are not visible to your camera. Format the card in your camera - that should return the "lost" space.

If it doesn't then you probably have a faulty card.

Put the card into your computer, and set the file view to view hidden files, be supprised what you will find.
