Can I hook up the Canon xs to an external monitor for live viewing? (Self Portraits) If so,which cords will I need and any reccomended monitors? What requirements does the monitor need to support this?
Background Story:
I need to do some self portraits for class and I have the canon rebel xs. I would like to see myself on a screen before I take the photo.

On the CD that came with your camera is a piece of software called "EOS Utility"

Install it, connect you XS to the USB, start the software.

That's an interesting question. I also own an XS but I've not tried to tether it. My t1i does it fine but I've not tried the XS.

Install your software from Canon if you've not done that. Then check the help files under tethering.

If the XS supports it it'll work, if not, you're out of luck.

You are referring to tethering. You will need to research to see if the XS supports it.

I use a Canon 1D and I connect the camera to my laptop with a USB cable, then I start EOS Utility in order to "tether" it to be able to do what you are wanting to do.

Yes, your camera came with the CD to do it too.

However, I'd like to make a small point. One of the races in space was to be the first person to sign their name in zero gravity. Ink would fly up in the pen so the Americans spent $40,000,000 developing a pen that would work in space. The Russians used a pencil.

Hang a small mirror behind the camera and look at it in liveview.

yes it's called tethering. You can find more info here http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=833425

One little nit-pick, it's cable or cables, not cords.
